When I first saw this magazine I was completely offended. I cannot believe that society has come this far to tell women they need to be a size zero or have zero belly fat. I thought we were on to the phase of accepting who we are and trying to be the best version of ourselves?! What happened? So, this week, I was going to talk about how there is a major discrepancy between how much professional women soccer players and men soccer players make (by the way it is around 40% difference), but this magazine cover just caught my eye so much (even though it was on a lower shelf at the grocery store) that I felt that I had to talk about it. Why is our nation (and the world, really) so completely obsessed with getting thin? I know that it is mostly due to how “fashion” portrays beauty, but come on! I’m not saying that I was never worried about becoming fat—in fact, I went on a diet of mostly fruit and vegetables for about a year or so and worked out religiously. I feel as though I was highly influenced by BodyRock.TV. The trainer was always in a skimpy outfit and was always so much tinier than I was. It was during that time that I was always cold and constantly hungry. And I was never happy with how I looked in the mirror.
Eventually, I returned to a normal eating and workout schedule. But it really is astounding just how much what you surround yourself with influences how you see yourself and the world around you. So, that being said, make sure you are surrounding yourself with positive people and influences—be that the TV you watch, magazines you read, or the songs you listen to. You are in charge of how happy you are, but what you are surrounded by will either increase your happiness or it might even cause depression. So be careful out there in a world that tries to make you buy this or eat that—in order to cause a fake sense of happiness. Believe in yourself and the one who made you and look to the future because nothing lasts forever.
