This list is in no particular order, just things that I miss about Japan that I cannot get/do here in Iowa. 1.) Ramen--there is NO good ramen around where I live--in the middle of nowhere. I can make it at home from ingredients I find at the Asian Market, but it is just not as good as the ones you get at the Ramen shops in Japan. One of the best ramen shops was one that was in downtown Iwaki. The picture above is of the one that I went to most often and had the most delicious miso-ramen! They had a set where you could get ramen and gyoza and it was the most delicious thing, EVER! 2.) Biking everywhere--since I lived in a pretty temperate area, I was able to bike most of the year. Plus, everything I wanted to go to was within biking distance. Well, I guess that depends on what you mean by "within biking distance". For me, everything was (except going to another city, of course. But I suppose you could if you didn't mind taking all day to get there and back). 3.) Kotatsu--during the winter, people in Japan bring out their kotatsu--basically a coffee table that you put a blanket over that has a built-in heater underneath. Oh it was great! It made me not want to do anything, though. When my neighbors and I would have game nights, sometimes the kotatsu monster would get us--meaning we would unconsciously slide further and further underneath the blanket and fall asleep. 4.) Mystery--because everything is in Japanese, sometimes things are a mystery and it ends up being a game to try and figure out what things are on a menu, in the store, etc. It was always fun. Except when you were really hungry and just wanted to eat something that you liked! 5.) Manga--getting manga in Japanese here is nigh impossible. And if there are manga in Japanese at the used book store, they are usually not what I would like to read. I miss going to Book Off (pictured) and being able to browse for hours to find the perfect manga that I liked and was at my reading level. Plus, the benefit of going to Book Off was that it was a second hand store, so the books were really cheap! What are you looking forward to doing/seeing/eating in Japan? What do you miss if you have gone to Japan and are back in your home country?
